When the "Freelance Dream" Feels Like a Struggle
Beyond the Hustle: What to Do When Freelancing Feels Heavy
We’ve all been there. You started your VA business for freedom and flexibility, but some Mondays, it feels like you’re just spinning your wheels. Maybe you’ve sent out dozens of proposals with no bites, or perhaps you finally have the clients, but the mental load of managing it all feels overwhelming.
When things don't go your way, it’s easy to let "imposter syndrome" take the driver’s seat. But here’s the truth: the struggle isn't a sign that you’re failing; it’s a sign that you’re growing.
The Power of the "Reset" Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your business is to stop working on it for an hour. If I’m having a slow day or the "no-client" funk is hitting hard, I’ve learned to step away from the computer. Staring at an empty inbox won't fill it, but it will drain your energy. Instead, try a complete mental reset:
Move your body: A quick yoga session or a walk outside can shift your perspective.
Quiet the noise: Use a 5-minute meditation to clear the "I'm not doing enough" thoughts.
Do something non-work related: Fold the laundry, bake something, or read a chapter of a book.
Giving yourself permission to pause isn't "laziness"—it’s maintenance. You’ll come back to your desk with a clearer head and much better focus.
Shift Your Focus When clients aren't knocking on the door, use that time to work on your business rather than just in it. Audit your email templates, update your portfolio, or reach out to past connections just to say hello. Productive action is the best cure for anxiety.
Manage the Overwhelm If you’re on the other side of the coin and feeling buried under tasks, remember that you don't have to do everything at once. Break your day into manageable blocks. Focus on your daily workflow management rather than the mountain of work ahead.
The Power of Staying Power The most successful freelancers aren't necessarily the "luckiest"—they are the ones who stayed in the game long enough for luck to find them. If you’re feeling discouraged today, take a step back, but don't take a step away.
Your business is a journey, not a sprint. Take the pressure off yourself to be "perfect" and just focus on being present.
What are you doing today to keep your momentum going?
